Mentoring Procedure

  1. Volunteer Guidelines for the Greater Albany School District. (Click here.)
  2. Complete the annual background check. The background check process takes quite some time, so the earlier you can get your form in, the better.
    • Download and complete the Background Check Form (2 pages). (Click here.)
    • Mail the form to:
      • Tara Dixson
        North Albany Middle School
        1205 North Albany Road NW
        Albany   OR   97321

  3. Read the lists of the Directors’ Requests (Click here.) to determine in which areas you could contribute.
  4. Review the Daily Schedules for the Middle Schools (Click here). (all on one schedule) and the High Schools (Click here) to determine the time period(s) in which you could mentor.

  5. Make direct contact with the Band Director via e-mail (no phone calls) to get your mentoring set up.  The Director will need to know:

    1. what you are volunteering to do;

    2. what instrument(s) you play;

    3. what time slot(s) you will be coming in; and

    4. what days of the week you’ll be there.

    School Director's E-Mail Addresses
    Calapooia Middle School and
    South Albany High School:
    isaac.andrew@albany.k12.or.us
    Memorial Middle School: julie.buchert@albany.k12.or.us
    North Albany Middle School: andy.nelson@albany.k12.or.us
    West Albany High School: stuart.welsh@albany.k12.or.us
    Timber Ridge Middle School: yvonne.mcmillan@albany.k12.or.us

  6. When you have been set up for a particular slot, please e-mail the Director 24 hours prior to coming in (or 24 hours prior to NOT coming in), so he/she has a reminder of who will be there and when. Having unexpected shows or no-shows is not only discourteous, but wreaks havoc upon lesson plans!

  7. After you have mentored, document your time by submitting a completed online Report Form (Click here). Once submitted, this form will send an e-mail to Linda and summarize your input for you to print if desired. (Does not work with Safari.)

Remember, the needs of the bands are as varied as the skills of the mentors wanting to help.  You can be of service by doing such things as:

  • helping a beginning student learn to play his instrument;
  • leading a weekly sectional in concert or jazz band;
  • prepping students for solo & ensemble contest;
  • helping in the band library;
  • playing your instrument along side the students during their rehearsals;
  • being a role model (all you non-music majors who still enjoy playing, this is for you!);
  • constructing equipment for use in the band program;
  • performing for the students; helping with publicity for school band programs;
  • and the list goes on.
